A Message from the CEO

Thank you for visiting the Tri Marine website and learning more about our company. Tri Marine was founded in 1972 as an Italian government owned tuna supplier based in Singapore. My partners and I took ownership in 1986, continuing to supply fish to Italy, but also to an increasingly globalized market. At that time, the world was a very different place with no internet, no cell phones, fewer people, and plenty of fish to be found in the open oceans. Tuna catch grew from roughly 1.5 million tons annually in 1972, to an estimated 4.8 million tons in 2015, making tuna a major economic driver and contributor to global food security. From coastal states to distant markets, tuna provides revenue, jobs, and healthy protein for millions of people. But today we have reached the limit to the pressure that most tuna resources can withstand. This means that as one of the world’s largest tuna suppliers, Tri Marine has a serious responsibility to not just serve the market, but also to promote conservation for the long-term.

Providing large volumes of wild-caught tuna to global markets while maintaining a healthy balance between economic, environmental, and social needs is not an easy task. Open ocean resources are shared among many nations, making the policy decisions to limit catch very difficult, and enforcement even more so. Markets want inexpensive fish, often pushing suppliers toward low cost but socially risky sources of labor that we cannot accept. There are no easy answers or a single solution, and no one can do it alone. This is why Tri Marine emphasizes and invests in sustainability on several fronts including the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation, the Seafood Task Force, the Marine Stewardship Council, the International Pole and Line Foundation, and Fair Trade.

Collaboration and like-minded business partners are also key to our long-term success. We always strive to lead by example, raising the bar, while demanding transparency and fair play.  We diligently focus our business on the right customers, working with those who share our values first and foremost, while doing the same for our suppliers. Tuna should not be seen only as a low-cost, commoditized source of protein. We need to encourage development of markets and sources that value and respect human lives, our oceans, and the renewable yet finite tuna resources on which our future depends.

Thank you.

Renato Curto, President and CEO
